You’ve heard the expression: “That’s great light.”

Hearing about great light, talking about great light, and maybe even recognizing certain types of great light… Is not the same as UNDERSTANDING great light!

Top-notch photographers learn everything they can about light. Why?

Because light is the basic building block of all photography.

When you understand it, you’ll be able to utilize it, and skyrocket your images to their very best. Understanding light means you’ll know how to “accurately” manipulate the light to your advantage.

Take a look at what this could mean for you:

Light affects the human mind
in many different ways...

But how much do you really know about the role it plays in your photography?

For example – Do you know why so many vacationers are out taking pictures at sunset for the family album?

It’s because the warm glowing warm light of a sunset, skimming across a serene landscape, causes feelings of peace and tranquility.

So the resulting photograph will allude to a sense of happiness!

This is just one of the many psychological effects of light. Effects that serious photographers who study light understand, and can UTILIZE in their photography to stand-out from everyone else.

You can stand-out too!

Understanding light gives you the power to control the mood and feeling in your shots.

What do you think mastering the core concepts of light would mean for your photography?

Today – We’re going to help you get there…

A rainbow is more than a pretty picture

Have you ever created a photograph, and then you were shocked, because the color of that photograph wasn’t even remotely close to what you saw with your eyes?

There are three very important reasons why that occurs-

  1. All light is composed of a “temperature” recorded as “Kelvin”, and that “Kelvin Temperature” is interpreted by our eyes and brain as a color. If the Kelvin Temperature is a lower number, the visible color is on the warmer end of the spectrum (red). If the Kelvin Temperature is a higher number, the visible color of light is on the cooler end of the spectrum (violet). There are numerous other colors that fall in between. Think of a rainbow!
  2. The human eye and brain have a near miraculous ability to “correct” what they perceive as incorrect color in a scene.
  3. The camera has limited ability to correct for what it perceives as incorrect color. This ability in digital cameras is referred to as the “white balance” setting. In photographic film, this ability was established as a film type, and that film type was to be used with a certain color temperature of light.

The above photograph is a perfect example of a situation where your eyes will correct for the color of light. However, your camera will not record accurate color unless it is properly set up for that particular light source.

Learning about the color of light is imperative to learning how to set up the white balance on your camera!

This is one of the many, many lessons you’ll get in this guide.
