Slow shutter speeds will help you produce great photography in low light. In day light, or when there’s enough ambient light available to you, a slow shutter speed – also called a long exposure – usually results in an overexposed image. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t use long exposures during daytime.

A neutral density filter can be used to create long exposure photographs in day light – exposures that can range from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on the light in the scene.

Creatively utilizing long exposures during daytime can reward you with wonderful photographs, especially when you’re able to capture motion. This technique works really well in photographing landscapes that contain moving water or clouds as it renders a silky texture to them and gives the photo a dreamy effect.

This post is a collection of landscape images shot during daytime that make great use of long exposure photography. We hope that they inspire you to give this technique a try. If you’d like to learn exactly how to capture such images, take a look at Kent DuFault’s guide to long exposure photography.
